What is Spiritual Direction?

Some call it spiritual friendship or companionship. Some call it anam cara. Spiritual Direction is simply an interpersonal relationship between a seeker, a guide, and the divine mystery.

Who is it for?

Anyone experiencing burnout, transition, deconstruction, grief, longing, or simply in need of discernment or space to exhale.

What happens in a session?

Largely led by the seeker, there can be intentional silence, guided visualization, centering prayer, gentle conversation, dream analysis, connecting with the breath, etc.

What kinds of people work with you?

Spiritual direction transcends religious systems and institutions. Here at Open Door, we tend to see folks who are experiencing a shift in their spiritual landscape and long for more grounding in a season of untethering.

What outcomes do people experience?

People familiar with the practice report experiencing deeper peace, renewed understanding, and more authentic presence in their lives after receiving direction.

"May today there be peace within. May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith. May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you. May you be content knowing you are a child of God. Let this presence settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love. It is there for each and every one of us."  - St. Theresa of Avila

  • Individual

Individual spiritual direction is an intimate encounter between the director, directee, and the directee’s higher power. Our trained directors can help you process and engage with your spirituality, revealing your own inner wisdom and hidden truths waiting to emerge.

  • Group

Group direction involves sharing the sacred space created by deep listening on behalf of a central sharer. Participants contemplate and pray on behalf of each other, as each member is invited to share and wonder about how God is at work in their inner lives.

  • Retreats

For individuals or groups, silent, themed, or customizable retreats may include a spiritual direction component. Contact us about facilitating your next retreat.
